  • Thomas Rogers of Kingston near Lewes…
    • on marriage of his eldest son…
      • granted £250 annuity to daughter-in-law… (no. WISTON/1591).
  • These properties, and other freehold estates are listed… (no. WISTON/1592)
    • and… were mortgaged… 31 March 1825… for £8,000 (no. WISTON/1593).
  • Also, the appointment of his receiver (no. WISTON/1599).

Object 3; Documents – Summary/Conclusion:

  • Thomas Rogers (biggest landowner in Kingston):
  • Took out a huge mortgage
    • ~3x estate’s working capital
    • ~4x annual wages bill for estate
  • Financially protected his eldest son’s wife
    • but excluded his own son!
  • Handed over estate management to two sons-in-law.
  • Eldest son responsible for these debts?
  • Gambling in brighthelmstone with Prince Regent’s cronies?
